Why do so many change initiatives fail? Building on the attention-based view of the firm, we identify two constitutive elements of a dynamic capability: attention control and problem-solving. Through a case study, we argue that the control element of dynamic capabilities regulates how organizations (dis-)engage attention on operational versus change-oriented tasks. A process model of how control and problem-solving interact to reconfigure resources and modify ordinary capabilities is proposed.
